In the Book of Joshua (Sefer Yehoshua), not to be confused in Hebrew with the name of the Lord, Yehosha, the man Yehoshua, son of Nun, met the pre-Incarnate Yehosha in Gilgal, over the west bank of the river Jordan, near Jericho after all the Bnei obeyed the Word of the LORD by undergoing adult circumcision and rested. (Joshua 5.) They might not know what they were doing but by obedience, they were obeying the Torah even to the fourth commandment concerning the Shabbat rest. It was because of this resting in obedience that the young men gained strength to fight the nephilim people who lived in the land that they were about to evict for the Lord.
10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
The next mention was the observing of the Passover in Gilgal in enemy territories. This speaks to us today that we may hold the Lord’s Supper wherever men of faith gather in the name of the Lord. It does not have to be in a special building. Gilgal was not “special”. It was a profaned place of child sacrifice by the pagans. Not only did they observed the Passover at Gilgal, 40 years after the night of the getaway, the Lord of the Shabbat, Yehosha Himself, came to meet with their leader, Yehoshua (Joshua).
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
14 And he said,
Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?
15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
Armor Of God Recap
Little do some know the armor narrative in Ephesians 6 by Paul begins with THE LORD at verse 10, not further down at 11.
The Lord Jesus must be the Captain of our army. After all, He is already the Captain of the Father’s heavenly armies (Joshua 5). In that appearance in a vision seen by Joshua, the Word of YHVH manifested in the role of the Captain of YHVH’s army. He says, “I now come.”
Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come.
As New Covenant believers and party to the covenant that our Captain established and brokered Himself, we need to put Him first.
Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:22 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.24 Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.
Paul followed his Captain to victory in his voyages, church plantings, discipleshiping and writing epistles to the local congregations. We all know that when the Lord is on our side, He helps us do what is otherwise impossible.
His banner over me is love.
