A Parable Of Believers Who Have Faith But No Spirit

Commentary to the first of three parables in Mathew 25

The personal lamp is faith; faith without oil does not shine a light in the darkness. Words of Christ in red.

1 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps[a] and went to meet the bridegroom.[b] 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

The virgins stand for people who are faithful alone to the Lord alone. A bride playing the harlot cannot qualify to be a virgin. But to be born anew we all need the Spirit to come fill us with an anointing of Himself. The lamp stand must be in a clean order in order that the Spirit will make a home in our lamp stand.

(V. 7) Five of the virgins also trimmed their lamps – symbolical of confessing sin by getting rid of the charred wick of the lamp. They actually have a little oil in their lamps at that time or their wick would not have charred. (V. 8) “Our lamps are going out.”

The other five virgins have enough oil just for themselves and they understand the importance of not giving away their oil in preference of obeying God over other needs at the critical hour (V. 6).

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. – Galatians 6| 1

May you welcome the Holy Spirit and have your oil filled because right now we still have enough time to repent and welcome the Spirit to fill us all. Shalom.
